Consultation on new information standard for end of life care

8 September 2011

The National End of Life Care Programme and the Department of Health are currently developing a new national information standard.

Throughout September 2011 they are asking professionals, partners and the public about their views on the core data that will make up the information standard. This data will be collected when a person approaches the end of life and recorded on electronic registers.

For further information and to complete the survey, visit the National End of Life Care Programme website. The deadline for completing the survey is Friday, 30 September.

New report compares people's preferences for where they die with actual place of death

2 August 2011

A new report compares people's preferences for place of death with actual place of death as recorded by Office for National Statistics mortality data. A population based telephone survey was used to explore people's preferences. The study was carried out by Barbara Gomes, Natalia Calanzani and Professor Irene Higginson from Cicely Saunders International. It was commissioned by the National End of Life Care Intelligence Network. It provides better information to direct service improvements, enabling more people to die in their place of choice.

Respiratory deaths report sheds light on service need

21 June 2011

Earlier discussion and planning of end of life care could result in more people dying in their place of choice, according to a report published today.

It notes that 69% of people with respiratory conditions other than lung cancer die in hospital - compared to an average of 58% of all deaths. That figure is higher than for any other condition and such patients are also the least likely to die at home (13%).

Published by the National End of Life Care Intelligence Network, the report also suggests that the likelihood of dying at home depends on the type of respiratory condition a person has.

Report on dementia deaths highlights new challenges for end of life care

9 November 2010

Care homes will face particular challenges in responding to the inevitable rise in dementia, including Alzheimer’s, a report suggests today.

The report, Deaths from Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and senility in England, published by the National End of Life Care Intelligence Network (NEoLCIN), says commissioners and providers across adult health and social care will be faced with meeting the needs of more people dying with these conditions as the population ages. It confirms that, unlike other conditions, most people with dementia, including Alzheimer’s, die in care homes.

Ageing population requires new approaches to end of life care, report warns

19 October 2010

Providers and commissioners of end of life care must address the implications of a predicted large increase in the numbers of people dying at a very old age, according to a report published today.

The report, Deaths in Older Adults in England, produced by the National End of Life Care Intelligence Network (NEoLCIN), analyses the numbers of deaths in people aged over 75, broken down into five-year age bands up to the over 90s. It also looks at where and from what conditions older people die.

It is the fourth report from the Network. See the Publications page for details of the other reports in the series.

New reports highlight variations in place of death across England

11 August 2010

A new report from the National End of Life Care Intelligence Network reveals that whether you die in hospital or your own home can depend on where you live. See the media release.

The report, Variations in Place of Death in England, is one of three published today.

Two others look at Deaths from Neurodegenerative Diseases in England, 2002 to 2008 and Deaths from Renal Diseases in England, 2001 to 2008.

Together, the reports show how a range of factors including age, sex, cause of death and socieconomic status can determine whether a person dies in their home or hospital or other place of death.
